… Adware

Adware definition

Defenition: – any software package that renders advertisements automatically with an eye to earn an income for its developers.
In fact, this is a form of malware, which shows unwanted advertisements on the computer screen.

Symptoms of infection:

  • a lot of ads, banners, pop-ups when you’re online (most often on the commercial sites like Amazon, EBay etc.);
  • text on the web pages turns to the hyperlinks.

Distribution method: adware is usually spreading in a “bundles” with some popular cost-free programs. It means that adware application installs by default along with desired software. To prevent such penetrating, choose a custom installation and uncheck all unwanted items from the list.

Danger:

  • tracks your browsing history and login data to find out your preferences and choose appropriate advertisement;
  • slows down your system;
  • distracts from the work, scares, make your eyes tired.

Treatment:

  • delete adware extension from the program list installed in your system;
  • reset the browser settings.

… Spyware

Spyware definition

Defenition: – software which asserts control over a computer without the user’s knowledge and gathering personal/organization’s data without their permission. Modern spyware programs are mainly focused on the tracking and storing users’ activities on the Web and showing pop-up ads.

Symptoms of infection:

  • a lot of ads, banners, pop-ups even you’re offline;
  • the computer works much slower due to additional process.

Distribution method: spyware mainly use a “bundle” method, but also it can occur the system throughout the spam letters attachments, so please be careful opening emails.

Danger:

  • gathers all of your actions on the computer and transfers this information to the third-parties;
  • slows down your system.

Treatment:

  • delete spyware extension from the program list installed in your system;
  • reset the browser settings.

… Browser hijacker

Browser hijacker definition

Defenition: – software that modifies a web browser’s settings without a user’s knowledge with the aim to add advertising into the browser. A browser hijacker changes the existing home page, search and error page on its own. Used to create traffic a particular website and increase its income.

Symptoms of infection:

  • your homepage looks unfamiliar;
  • a lot of ads, banners, pop-ups when you’re online (whenever you go).

Distribution method: browser hijackers, like adware applications, are usually spreading in a “bundles” with some popular cost-free programs.

Danger:

  • slows down your system;
  • tracks your online activity and login data;
  • produces irrelevant search results, so you can’t find anything that you need;
  • redirects you to malicious domains;
  • may contain such spyware as keylogger to gather your banking and e-mail authentication details;
  • can also harm the Windows registry, often till the kingdom come.

Treatment:

  • delete browser hijacker extension (folder) from the program list installed in your system;
  • reset the browser settings.

… PUP

potentially unwanted program

– Potentially Unwanted Program; the software which is undesired, despite the chance that user can agree to install it.

PUPs usually contain adware, spyware, and toolbars, don’t really harmful, but quite annoying and spreading the web in bundles with other cost-free programs.

… Rogue

Rogue definition

Defenition: – type of malicious software and internet fraud that make user believe in a virus presence on his computer, and move them into paying for this fake malware removal tool.

Symptoms of infection:

  • pop-up windows with false alerts (tells you to upgrade software to a non-existent paid versions);
  • your computer slows down.

Distribution method: rogues often use a “bundle” method, but sometimes they look so good that you can take it for real antimalware, so be careful choosing such tool!

Danger:

  • scares you all the time!
  • slows down your system;
  • uses tracking to gain your personal data;
  • installs another malware;
  • disables updates for Windows and your real antivirus program;
  • closes access to the antivirus developers web pages.

Treatment: delete rogue extension and all its files from the program list installed in your system.
